Transmission systems have been playing a significant role in enabling the level of fuel efficiency of a vehicle, and this has been the main focus in their development. However, an additional feature has been taken into consideration in the development of transmissions, which is in offering enhanced levels of driver comfort during their journey. The development of advanced technologies surrounding transmission systems can be enabled for vehicles that are in the mid and top segments as well as those that are for specialised services, since cost is not much of a limitation. However, the challenge is in bringing solutions to the mass segment passenger vehicles that have to adhere to extremely stringent cost limitations.
MANUAL TRANSMISSION IN THE CURRENT SCENARIO
The Indian automotive industry traditionally, and to a large extent even at present, rely on manual transmission (MT) systems. While the top-end models across commercial vehicles and four-wheelers are offered with automatic transmission (AT) options alone, the majority of the passenger vehicle segment that caters to the masses uses MT systems. MT has been the primary drivetrain offered by OEMs in India for years, primarily keeping in mind preference of Indian customers for lower-priced options offering durability, low operating cost & maintenance, and most importantly, higher fuel efficiency, observed Vinay Piparsania, Consulting Director – Automotive, Counterpoint Research.
Avik Chattopadhyay, Co-Founder, Expereal, echoed the view of Piparsania, saying that MT continues in India only because of its cost advantage over automated and automatic options. This cost is made up of two elements – purchasing price and running costs, he noted. In traditional automatic transmissions, there is a drop in fuel efficiency, he observed.

Good lighting makes a major contribution to road safety. In 2011, the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) presented an evaluation system for headlamps that can objectively assess the quality of illumination and glare limitation. New light sources like LEDs and lighting functions (glare-free high beam, partial high beam) have been available for several years, so that an extension of the proven CIE method is necessary, which takes into account, among other things, changed switch-on and service lives of new lighting functions and represents a generally understandable evaluation system. An evaluation system presented in the following by the Technische Uni versität Darmstadt, which was developed by an encompassing expert commission, is intended to provide representative data and enable an objective evaluation of headlamp performance.
