Norcal Next Generation
PULL Magazine|April 2018

Some people may tell you that two wrongs don’t make a right.

Norcal Next Generation

But what about two rights? (Is that a left?) For 2018, two right teams have joined forces, and by this November, we wouldn’t be too shocked to see them in the title-chase for No.1 Bike Shop (if not in the points lead).

NorCal-Next Generation is a joint venture formed by two of the longest running BMX teams in Northern California. Together, they have racked up a combined 27 years of team competition with USA BMX (formerly ABA). These two teams, run by The Elliott Family and the Lowry Family, have actually been talking about this joint venture for many years due to their similar mission statements and passion for helping family’s and riders progress to new levels.

For the Elliott family, their original roots go back about 38 years ago. It was the spring of 1980 when Kent Elliott and his little sister Cheri (yes.. that Cheri) begged their parents to take them to the middle of a dusty field surrounded by motorcycles and 4X4s at a Sacramento CA County owned OHV Park. There were no GPS or cell phones guiding them to the track (how anyone found it is a miracle in itself), and there was certainly no formal guidance about the sport provided when they rolled up to the track. They were greeted, however, by a loud skinny teenager named Gork (yes.. that gOrk), shouting his now historic manual gate-starting cadence …. “GEEEEEEETTTT SEEEEEETTTTT !! PEDALSREADYANYTIME!!!” (Yes that last part was one word!)

GOLD CUP NORTH CENTRAL

If there is one good thing about this year’s Covid closures of states and counties, it is that tracks that might not normally have gotten a shot at hosting a National or Gold Cup event, were now given that opportunity.

When you roll into the local Quiktrip and one of Tucson’s finest looks at your shirt and asks if you know Corben Sharrah, you can only be in one city in America. Often coined as the loudest city in BMX, it doesn’t matter if there is a single fan or a gaggle of Tucsonans, they know how to bring the energy.

GOLD CUP NORTHEAST

With all of the uncertainty in event planning this year, it was not a huge surprise that the DK Bicycles North East Gold Cup Finals shifted locations somewhat last minute. We were very lucky to have it and at a great location, Akron BMX in Akron, Ohio. The Big Red Truck was last here for the 2018 North East Gold Cup Finals, and the track is located in a pretty incredible location.
