SHOOTING STARS

1. JIMMY McGRORY

445 appearances; 468 goals

The greatest goalscorer ever to have worn the Hoops. Jimmy McGrory’s place at the top of the goalscoring tree is assured, probably for all time. His record is, quite simply, phenomenal. He averaged more than a goal a game during a career with Celtic that lasted 15 years, from 1922-37. McGrory joined the club at the age of 17 and made his debut against Third Lanark on January 20, 1923 in a 1-0 defeat. He quickly became a hero for Hoops fans and went on to create a phenomenal scoring record that has stood the test of time. It included, on one occasion, EIGHT goals in a 9-0 victory over Dunfermline.

2. BOBBY LENNOX

571 appearances, 273 goals

One of the Lisbon Lions, Lennox is second in Celtic’s all-time top goalscorers. He was also once Celtic’s top post-war league scorer but a certain Henrik Larsson took that record away from him. Bestowed with a unique turn of pace, Lennox played for the club between 1961-80, during which time he won 11 championship medals, including all of the famous nine-in-a-row triumphs. He was also part of the most famous team in Celtic’s history - the Lisbon Lions, who won the European Cup in 1967. One can only speculate as to how many goals the pacy Lennox might have been credited with if so many hadn’t been ruled offside!

3. HENRIK LARSSON

315 appearances, 242 goals
