VIBRANT CITY SCENE ‘IN A GOOD PLACE’

Poetry has ‘taken off' in pandemic

PLYMOUTH has a vibrant poetry scene which has only grown stronger during the pandemic lockdowns, says the organiser of one of the city’s key literary events.

Spencer Shute said poets and writers took inspiration from the difficulties of the past two years, when they were unable to attend events and readings, and are now producing excellent new work.

He will be showcasing 14 of the city’s most established writers at the next Providence Poets event, on Wednesday, January 26, from 7.45pm at the Providence pub, in Greenbank.

But Spencer said there are far more talented poets and scribes in  the city and he wants to find new voices for future events.

“The scene has mutated, a bit like the virus,” Spencer said. “It found a way of surviving and now is in a really good place.
