Mont Blanc towers slightly less over all other mountains in western Europe after French experts lopped a metre off its height.

Following an expedition in September the mighty peak in the heart of the French Alps was found to be 4,807.81 metres (15,773.65ft) high, lower than the last published estimate of 4,808.72 metres, in 2017 .

“Now it’s up to climatologists, glaciologists and other scientists to look at all the data collected and put forward all the theories to explain this phenomenon,” the geographical team told a press conference yesterday in the town of Saint- Gervais-les-Bains , at the foot of the mountain .
