Having been dragged into De Chambeau's orbit and gone down the distance rabbit hole in the past, McIlroy is happy to rein in the desire to destroy courses with pure power and plot his way to the winners' circle in 2022.

Like Woods in his pomp, McIlroy is never going to be short but he believes the biggest gains for him are to be made between the ears.

He will certainly not be chasing any long drive records when his season starts at the Abu Dhabi Championship today.
