The Prime Minister revealed the Government was preparing a major education programme to ensure pupils can return to classrooms in September fully prepared for the new academic year.

His move comes after the decision to abandon the attempt to fully reopen schools before the summer holidays.

Mr. Johnson said his original timetable had been scrapped because the infection rate was still too high to allow a safe return to lessons for all pupils.

He said: “It is because the rate of infection is not yet quite low enough, and because we are not able to change our social distancing advice including smaller class sizes in schools, that we are not proceeding with our ambition to bring back all primary pupils at least for some weeks before the holidays.

“Instead we are working with teachers to bring back as many pupils as we can within those smaller class sizes. We do fully intend to bring all children back to school in September, provided the progress we are making continues.

“What we’re doing is a huge amount of catch-up for pupils over the summer months.”
