The singer, who grew up on the Caribbean island, witnessed the historic moment at midnight as Barbados ended almost 400 years of ties to the British monarchy and swore in its first president, Dame Sandra Mason, formerly the Queen’s representative as Governor General.
The birth of the republic, 55 years to the day since Barbados declared independence, formally ends the colonial ties which began in 1625 when an English ship claimed the island for King James I.
It may also embolden other former colonies to cut ties to the British monarchy as the Queen’s reign nears its end.
