According to a report by the United Nations, the world produces 50 million tonnes of electrical waste (e-waste) a year but only 20 per cent of this total amount is recycled. Worryingly, global e-waste production is estimated to reach 120 million tonnes by 2050 if current trends continue.
Mohamed Tarek El-Fatatry, “Mo” as he is sometimes known, is aware of this growing problem and wants to impact the world positively. He started his sustainability career in the solar energy industry but decided to pivot towards e-waste management because he was concerned about how obsolete electronic devices are improperly discarded. After moving to Malaysia in 2018, El-Fatatry founded ERTH (Electronic Recycling Through Heroes) with the aim of solving the country’s e-waste problem.
