Motherhood brings new worries, but ditch that anxiety—many common concerns are baseless
Remember life before you became a mum, when you stressed out over greasy hair, being late for work or losing out on Take That tickets? It’s a whole lot trickier now. As mums, we worry about everything. And that’s perfectly normal—it’s just part of the process of trying to be the best mums that we can be. But it’s important to stop your worst fears from spinning out of control. “Sometimes you can get fixated on one particular worry,” explains psychologist Anjula Mutanda. “This might be based on something that has happened before, something you’ve read about or sometimes an imagined fear. But these fears can be broken down from insurmountable to manageable to stop them from getting in the way of you enjoying quality time with your baby.” If any of these fears run through your head, it’s time to banish them.
1 “She isn’t meeting her milestones”
If your child hasn’t yet reached a particular milestone, but your friends’ little ones of a similar age have, you’re bound to feel anxious. “Don’t get into drawn into competitive parenting,” suggests Anjula. “It only increases your worry and instead of enjoying your baby, you start anxiously watching and monitoring her. Subconsciously, you may then pass this anxiety on to your baby.”
Mention your concerns to your health visitor or GP, but if they’re not worried, there’s no need for you to be. “Children focus on different skills at different times,” reassures Anjula. “Some talk a lot first, and walk later, while others do things in reverse. Focus on what your baby is doing instead of what she’s not.”
