Twin sisters Stacy-Leigh and Ché-Leigh Peinke followed a shared passion for holiday footwear and launched their striking range of Sweet Peas sandals.
IT WAS ON a family holiday in Greece that the Peinke twins’ passion was born. ‘We felt very inspired by the gorgeous handmade leather ladies’ sandals and knew we wanted to make beautiful sandals for the women in South Africa,’ says Stacy-Leigh, whose nickname is ‘Sweet Pea’.
Having no knowledge of the sandal industry didn’t discourage them. Stacy-Leigh had studied international hotel management at Varsity College and was working as a human-resources manager. Ché-Leigh had studied integrated marketing management and was an accounts manager. ‘Neither of us had anything to do with fashion,’ laughs Ché-Leigh.
The sisters continued in their respective fields while exploring the footwear industry online and through their personal networks. ‘Finding the right contacts is key – we found terrific mentors who gave us a lot of guidance,’ says Stacy-Leigh.
