LADIES, GET YOUR RODS READY! HEADS UP, THIS ISN’T A GUIDE ON HOW TO CATCH A LITERAL FISH BUT IT’S A PSA ON THE DANGERS OF BEING CATFISHED. TAMMY CHAN SPEAKS TO FOUR WOMEN ON THEIR EXPERIENCE AND DISCUSSES HOW YOU CAN BE MORE ALERT IF YOU FIND YOURSELF IN THE SAME SITUATION.

NOBODY'S FOOL

According to the Urban Dictionary, catfishing is defined as a fake or stolen identity created or used for the purpose of beginning a deceptive relationship. More often than not, it commonly involves using stolen pictures or info of an unwitting third party. Catfishing has been around for decades now (there’s even a reality-based American documentary television series about it) but it is still a dangerous scam that is affecting women all around the world today.

Jessica*, 28, recalls that she was a victim of this scam way before the existence of smart phones and dating apps. “I was 13 years old and on Yahoo Messenger most of the time after school. One day this boy sent me a message and we started chatting. It never occurred to me to ask for more pictures since I thought his profile looked legit. I even gave him my house phone number and every night, he’ll give me a call around 8-9pm. He used a public phone so the conversation lasted depending on how many coins he had that night. #truestory!

A few months later, my dad bought me a phone and we resorted to communicating via SMS. It got to a point where I believed that he was my boyfriend. I would send him my pictures and I would turn on my side of the webcam whenever we were on a video call. His excuse for not turning his webcam on was that he was in a cyber cafe.

However, I found out that it was all a lie when I was browsing through Myspace and came across another account that used the same picture as the one he had on his Messenger profile. I was shocked and immediately assumed he was cheating on me! I called and confronted him but because we were already so close at that point, he came clean and told me the truth – that he was the one using someone else’s picture.
