Sugerimos iniciar el recorrido en San Francisco, donde, tras rentar un auto en el aeropuerto (SFO), puedes dirigirte al primer destino: el Parque Nacional Volcánico Lassen. Para llegar, se toma la autopista I-5 N y se recorren 246 millas (casi 400 km; cinco horas de trayecto). Si deseas hacer alguna parada intermedia, recomendamos Sacramento o Napa.
PARQUE NACIONAL VOLCÁNICO LASSEN (1)
Este Parque Nacional tiene como distintivo la actividad termal volcánica. Aquí se encuentran cuatro tipos de volcanes (estratovolcán, de caldera, domo de lava, cono de ceniza), además de aguas termales, lodo burbujeante (mudspots) y humeantes fumarolas que pueden verse en Sulphur Works.
Es aconsejable detenerse brevemente en el Centro de Visitantes, donde se puede aprender más del lugar y pedir mapas de las diferentes rutas (el lugar tiene 240 kilómetros de caminos).
Para hacer un buen hike por la montaña, se necesitan zapatos de nieve (snowshoes), que pueden rentarse previamente en Mineral, Chester, Redding, o Chico. El terreno empinado del área crea fenomenales vistas.
