Give thought to placement and mood and the rest will follow.
Lighting is, of course, an essential element to consider when building or renovating. A home with abundant natural light somehow feels more relaxing, good task lighting is critical for the kitchen and study, while blocking out the light contributes to a good night’s sleep. Lighting is also a great tool for creating mood, expressing personality or adding a touch of luxury. In this project, a full-scale update of an old bungalow on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, the owners requested a “fresh, modern beach house”, with a few surprising elements for drama. Follow their lead and light your home just right.
1 INTO THE VOID
Choose lights that work with the proportions of the void they are hanging in. They should give structure to the stairwell and sit comfortably within it. The shape and/or colour should complement balustrade details too. Pendant lights are a natural fit, either cascading down the stairs or hanging centrally in the void. Wall lights are an equally elegant option.
2 FINE FOR DINING
In the dining area, ensure a pendant light radiates its glow over the entire table so everyone feels the love. Be aware of the ceiling height: if it’s less than 2.8m, a wall sconce or long, lean suspension light (hung close to the ceiling) may be a better bet. The bottom of the fitting should be at least 90cm above the tabletop so diners have a clear view of one another across the table. Select a light that speaks to the dining setting (or other surrounding elements, if in an open-plan space). This is a great opportunity to express your personality!
