The medicine, dexamethasone, helps prevent inflammation. Inflammation is the pain or swelling that occurs when the body fights an injury or illness.
The researchers administered the medicine to Covid-19 patients who were struggling to breathe and on ventilators or needed extra oxygen. Dexamethasone reduced deaths in patients on ventilators by up to one-third, saving one more out of every eight people on a ventilator than when dexamethasone wasn’t used.
