What Gay TV's Future Can Learn From Its Past

The December 2003 cover story of this magazine declared that “Gay TV is here, and the revolution will be televised.

What Gay TV's Future Can Learn From Its Past

Writer Ned Zeman was referring to the seeming preponderance of L.G.B.T.-centered television shows available to audiences at the dawn of what is our current golden age. As fate would have it, the two most Zeitgeist-y series featured in the article, and on the cover—Will & Grace and Queer Eye— have returned to TV recently, a little polished and modernized, but still recognizably the same shows. Was this the bold future we envisioned at the onset of the Gay TV revolution, or are we stuck in a loop?

Some progress has been made. This year, GLAAD’s annual “Where We Are on TV” report found more regular L.G.B.T.Q. characters on broadcast television than ever before, noting increases on cable as well. So gay TV is out there, it’s just more diffuse. Which has been one (controversial) aim of the broader gay-rights movement, certainly; normalcy, parity, integration into mainstream American life.
