Just like every engineering graduate, Akshay – a final-year student is in a dilemma. He is interested in enriching his knowledge in Mechanical Engineering, his core discipline. So, should he appear for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and pursue an M.Tech? Since GATE scores are valid for three years, should he crack GATE, take up a PSU job that pays well, gather some invaluable experience and then decide whether to pursue higher studies? This ambivalence persists with even those who have cracked one of the toughest entrance exams for entry to postgraduate courses. “My main aim was higher studies. I opted to appear for GATE 2016 because it’s the best way to go for further studies in my chosen field as it allows a chance to study at the IITs. Pursuing M.Tech would allow me to be more clear with my concepts. In my view, an M.Tech from any of the IITs will also increase my chances of a good placement at a well-known company in my chosen field,” says Desham Manideep Reddy, who got All India Rank 29 (Aerospace Engineering) in GATE 2016.
