Pineapple Express
Sussex Life|May 2018

All rise for the majestic pineapple, which has apparently just overtaken the avocado as our nation’s favourite fruit.

Grace & Flavour
Pineapple Express

It was Christopher Columbus who first brought a pineapple to Europe, in 1493, some two centuries before the avocado appeared for the first time on our shores.

For centuries the pineapple has been an international symbol of wealth and graciousness. Although not in some police circles. In one of my Roy Grace novels, a police officer receives

“The Order of the Pineapple.” A detective friend told me it means you have been right royally shafted, and very painfully. I’d best not go into more detail in a family magazine...

So, is it our new enthusiasm for healthy eating that has raised the pineapple to its lofty heights? Erm, not exactly. Apparently it’s the rise in popularity of Hawaiian pizza topping – pineapple with ham. I love pizza – who doesn’t? But as a diabetic I’m aware of just how many carbs and calories there can be in one – often up to 2,000. Healthy? I don’t think so.
