ONE OF WEST SUSSEX’S MOST HISTORIC TOWNS, ARUNDEL IS HOME TO ANTIQUES, GREAT VIEWS – AND A FAIRYTALE CASTLE

Entering Arundel by road from the east affords one of the most beautiful views in Sussex. The small market town has a population of 3,650 with its vista dominated by the Roman Catholic Arundel Cathedral and Arundel Castle, dating back to the 1868 and 1068 respectively. In 2017, the castle welcomed a record 180,000 visitors through its gates.
Despite its compact size, Arundel possesses a glut of antique, arts, crafts and speciality shops as well as a surprisingly large number of pubs and restaurants. The Celebration of Sussex Life Award-winning Sparks Yard doubles as both with a shop selling gifts and kitchenware downstairs and a family-friendly restaurant upstairs. The local Arundel Brewery produces a range of craft ales and has a shop in the town centre.
A trip down Mill Road is a must for families – the café at Swanbourne Lake serves lunch and cream tea, there are rowing boats for hire and the resident ducks are always happy to be fed. Enjoy a stroll round the lake before heading across the road to the 65-acre Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust where recent sightings include bats and lapwings.
Arundel Castle Cricket Ground usually hosts a couple of Sussex CCC games per season with Durham visiting in 2018 for a County Championship fixture.
