The motherhood journey is full of wonderful experiences and breastfeeding is definitely one of them. It is not just a physical act, but also an opportunity for you and your baby to establish a strong mother-child bond. If you are a first-time mother and are feeling nervous about your breastfeeding journey, these are the important things you need to know for your breastfeeding preparation.

Prepare Ahead of Time

Equipping yourself with as much information as you can about breastfeeding even before your delivery is important so you know what to expect when the time comes. Read books and online resources (like the La Leche League) on breastfeeding, attend talks and breastfeeding preparation courses, and get advice from experienced mothers.

Understanding how breastfeeding works will also help in ensuring your baby receives a sufficient number of feeds for his growth and development. “Many mothers in Singapore cite insufficient milk as the reason why they give up breastfeeding. Women must understand the fundamental principle of demand and supply where breastfeeding is concerned and the need for frequent feeds. Mothers must prepare for help in other responsibilities so she can concentrate on establishing her milk supply in the early days,” says A/Prof Yong Tze Tein, senior consultant, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, SGH.

What Can’t I Eat?

There are generally no specific foods to avoid when you are breastfeeding. Simply ensure that you maintain a healthy and balanced diet so your baby receives all the good nutrients too.

If, however, you are still wary, lactation consultant, Helen Espina Cruz at Raffles Hospital suggests mothers consume home-cooked food and avoid raw food to remove any risk of contamination or food poisoning.
