The Olympic gold medallist on why there’s no set mould for horses, the importance of patience, and his three equestrian heroes

I WOULD love to have my good friend Shear H2O (Solo) back now. He was a horse with such heart and if I had him now, I could do a better job producing him. We didn’t do badly – but we could have done some incredible things.

In training, I live by remembering to treat each horse as an individual and progress with him accordingly –there is no cookie-cutter mould for horses. I have a flexible mould for what I want from horses at certain stages, but there is no single way to get there and you can’t force horses down one path. You have to help guide them down their own routes to maximise their potential.
