HOW TO START DOMINATING

Adam Williss
Why Range Matters

LET ME SAY IT RIGHT AWAY… RANGE DETERMINES POSTURE. Unfortunately, too many Wing Chun practitioners do not understand this simple truth. The fact is, range determines how you move, how you carry yourself, and how you respond to an attack. Ultimately, range determines your priorities in a fight.

“What?” they say. “Do you mean to tell me you think Wing Chun should look different at different ranges?” Yep. That’s what I’m saying! And no… just because it looks different at one range doesn’t make it “poor structure”!

Too many armchair quarterbacks, mixed-martial dabblers, or long-term traditional preservationists look at my long-range Wing Chun and try to tell me what I’m doing is not Wing Chun! To them, I say, “Then tell me why am I so successful against you? I mean, the proof isn’t in your theories. The proof is in my consistent ability to dominate you. So maybe… just maybe… you should listen to me.”

So, here’s what I’ve discovered about range through my ability to dominate anyone physically, regardless of size or strength. And to be honest, it’s far from revolutionary.

Most people don’t understand the simple idea of rangeinfluence—I don’t get why they don’t. I mean, it doesn’t take a Master’s Degree to see how range changes things. Yet, time and time again, whether it be by me or by someone else, I see a complete misunderstanding of range-influence as one of the top reasons people get dominated.
