She spends too much. He’s too controlling. He’s damn cheap but she’s even cheaper. Forget not lifting the toilet seat up – one’s financial habits is what really gets another all riled up, according to a poll by Money Magazine where 70 per cent of married couples argue more about money than they do over household chores, sex, snoring and time spent together.

Fortunately, financial squabbles can be resolved – with communication and compromise. “Financial compatibility plays an important role in a relationship,” says Dato’ Dr. Arunan Selvaraj, lawyer and author of Saving Your Marriage. “Marriage is a partnership. Therefore, both parties should play a role in managing the finances of the family. There are solutions which can solve money matters and avoid a breakdown in a relationship.”

Here, he offers his take on how to best resolve the common gripes about money.

MY HUSBAND IS TOO CHEAP!

“My husband lives frugally. There’s always a look of fear whenever I mention spending money, whether it is to go out for dinner or to buy a new couch. I understand how important it is to save money but is it so wrong to want a treat once in a while?” Ah – the common she wants but he doesn’t want. Everyone has different views when it comes to money; unfortunately, these differences are what often cause clashes between couples, especially when one is extremely tight while the other is a bit more lax.
