At just 28, Boitumelo Thulo – better known as Boity - is Well and truly Killing It

Natalie Roos
Owning Her Throne

Following her breakout role as Mpho Bogatsu on Mzansi Magic’s Rockville and her stint as a presenter on ETV’s Club 808, Boity has become one of South Africa’s most well-loved personalities and built an impressive empire that includes fashion collabs with Sissy Boy, dropping rap tracks with Nasty C and launching her own all-natural toning product. This month, the entrepreneur and self-confessed fitness freak was announced as the ambassador for fragrance brand Impulse. Sassy AF – and a shape-shifter of many talents – Boity lets us in on doing the most.

You’re known as an actress/model/ entrepreneur. Which ‘label’ do you identify with the most?

I used to gravitate towards acting. It was my first love for a long time, and it felt like what I was meant to be doing. But as I’ve grown (and the more I’ve done), I’ve found a balance between doing what I enjoy in the moment and being open to new things. I’ve never felt that I needed to stop doing something and go back to something else. I’ve given myself over to doing whatever presents itself.

You grew up in Potchefstroom, and were raised by your grandparents. What made you go into entertainment?

It’s a calling. My grandparents have told me that, from a very young age, I’d imitate people on TV and memorise TV ads. I think they knew even more than I did that I’d eventually enter the media space. I didn’t know it would happen the way it has – I studied psychology and criminology. My plan was to become a serial killer profiler … but God’s timing is everything. He wanted me in this industry.

Do you remember your first day on set?
