With global warming having become a reality, efforts are on across the globe to make for a greener, better world. In India too, government bodies, private organizations and corporates are working hand-in-hand in launching several green initiatives to deal with the environmental crises at hand. Ahead of World Environment Day on June 5, Outlook Business takes a look at how India is painting the world green.
With every passing season, summers have been getting hotter, and winters colder, all thanks to global warming. No one knows how much warming is ‘safe’. However, what we do know is that climate change is already harming people and affecting ecosystems majorly. Melting glaciers, disintegrating polar ice, thawing permafrost, changing monsoon patterns, rising sea levels, changing ecosystems and fatal heat waves are all proof that environmental damage is indeed a mammoth reality staring us in the face.
Across the world, be it through activism or green initiatives, efforts are on to make for a greener, better world. In India too, government bodies and private organizations are launching several green initiatives to deal with the environmental crises at hand.
GREEN ENERGY IN INDIA
India’s power sector is one of the most diversified in the world. The electricity demand in the country has increased rapidly and is expected to rise further in the years to come. But setting up of new power plants is inevitably dependent on import of highly volatile fossil fuels. Thus, it has become essential to tackle the energy crisis through judicious utilization of abundant renewable energy resources, such as biomass energy, solar energy, wind energy and geothermal energy.
Over the years, India has been taking a number of green initiatives and switching to renewable energy for its upcoming major projects. Trade ports, railway stations are smartly and creatively being developed to minimise carbon emissions, making the country a fast growing green energy consumer. At the same time, the country is also receiving aid from its international associates such as France, who are helping it achieve its ambitions.
