We at Cook always start the incoming year by looking back at experiences of the year that was. It’s our way of stepping back, an opportunity for us to appreciate everything that has happened in the past year. While we at Cook enjoy our jobs and all that it entails, being caught up in the daily tasks doesn’t leave much time to stop and smell the flowers. Our January issue is also a nice and compact souvenir for our readers. Having a collection of a year’s worth of our best recipes packed into one issue is convenient for recipe collectors.

The start of the New Year also means looking forward to what’s new and which things will trend. One of the best “trends” I kept seeing in 2018 was the attention and importance given to rediscovering the provinces. From heirloom ingredients and recipes to reviving everything traditional, the previous year was a positive development with regards to renewing interest in everything local.

2019 is Cook’s 19th year in print, a year short of two decades. While we embrace technology and all the convenience it brings, we’re mighty proud to still be on paper. This year will also be a huge year for me, personally as I will be getting married in February. While we can never know what the new year brings, the fact that we are still here, celebrating, hoping, wishing, is enough to be grateful for. Here’s to 2019, our best year yet!
