Our annual issue of World of Watches Legacy represents a deep, calming breath amidst the chaos of all things new. We take a closer look at the why of watchmaking. Like why the Breguet Type XX was such an influential reference in the world of aviation watchmaking. We research its history and provenance and juxtapose it against the modern re-issue of this legendary timepiece. We look at why brands like Jaeger-LeCoultre are purposefully refurbishing watches that are 50, sometimes 80 years old, to literally breathe new life into things from their past, and we visit the birthplace of the timepieces from some of the most renowned names to see how their history shaped their future.

When watches transcended the barrier from something you need
to something you want, the industry had to make a switch. It had to go from
competing on price to competing for attention. It replaced practicality with
emotional appeal, and with that perhaps made thousands of jobs within the
Swiss watchmaking industry secure at least for the foreseeable future. In this
issue, we take a look at some of the brands, independent or otherwise, that have
embraced the fact that watches no longer need to be traditional and instead
utilise all the tools available to create a timekeeping device in exceedingly
creative ways.

It used to be that the watch industry would begin its cycle anew at the start of each year. When Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) was still around we would all brave the tail end of the Swiss winter and shuffle into the Palexpo in Geneva come January. Then once again as the ice thaws and spring arrives, the gears of Baselworld grind into action, drawing thousands of journalists back into Switzerland once again. With both shows now combined into Watches & Wonders Geneva and recently concluded on 2nd April 2023, the start date of an entire industry now only really kicks into full swing at the end of the first Quarter.

Just once, I would like to have an issue go by without outsized world events looming over me. We live in interesting times so more disruptions are likely, but we are grateful that Watches and Wonders Geneva is on track, and our team is likely to be there by the time you read this (and maybe back too). I will say nothing about economic headwinds on the way in this note, but I cannot ignore it either because the Spring issue takes a long and hard look at the state of the watchmaking trade, as far as 2022 goes. I will also be using this space for a personal message later, regarding the passing of Gerd Rüdiger Lang.

Collaborations between watch brands and brands from other luxury markets are in trend and we would not be surprised if this continues well into the near future. Such collaborations offer timepieces that access a sense of creativity not originally available in each individual brands’ core collections. Have any collaborations caught your eye?

First quarter of 2021 went by really fast. We are already well into the Spring season when many new watches emerge and the plans and activities of watch brands are being made apparent to us and, subsequently, to you. The key word of 2020 so far is COVID-19. The seemingly unstoppable virus is claiming not only human lives but also affecting our lifestyles. Furthermore, the virus has brought travel to its knees and, with it, Baselworld and Watches & Wonders edition 2020. The former is postponed to January of 2021 whereas the latter is cancelled. Already, in recent times, World of Watches has had several invitations to watch launch events overseas cancelled due to preventive measures. It is not an easy time and already sales of timepieces in our region have seen a drop. Local events are not spared as well with postponements or cancellations of public parties and soirées.

This issue is all about innovation and reinvention. We take great pride and pleasure in scrutinizing the latest watch releases
and writing in detail about them for your reading pleasure. It is after all, the festive season that will lead all the way to the Chinese
New Year in 2020 and, we are quite sure that our readers will be wanting to know what noteworthy timepieces are in the market during
this hectic time of the year. The cover story this issue is a feature on the Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition Gyrotourbillon Westminster Perpétuel. It is truly a marvel of watchmaking and justifies its presence on our cover for simply being a mind-boggling timepiece that has a large array of features and functions. 2019 has been a good year so far. As we can see, the year has been bountiful with many fine releases of new timepieces.

that successfully combines both haute horlogerie and haute joaillerie. Also, I would like to call attention upon the write-up featuring my
most recent trip to Japan to once again visit the Seiko Epson factory. It is a most insightful visit with some never before seen pictures of the
mysterious facilities within their manufactory. Within our pages this issue is also a big article about the recently
concluded Beyond Boundaries exhibition by Cartier and the Beijing Palace Museum. Definitely, it will be of keen interest to not only
enthusiasts of the brand but also history buffs. Our events coverage is again updated with the latest news and happenings relating to
watches in our country – this time we have articles covering the boutique openings of Panerai and Seiko Malaysia as well as the
monumental 50th anniversary of the Moon Landing exhibition by Omega in Kuala Lumpur. Finally, at the point of the 62nd year of the independence of our country along with the 56th year of the formation of Malaysia, we would like to wish all our readers the healthiest of times with the most interesting of watches!

It is 2019 and already we have witnessed new things emerging from the watch industry. In fact, things have been brewing since 2018 and we are excited to see what other exciting developments will appear. Of course, right now, we are in the wake of the big announcements surrounding Baselworld 2019 and also the major launches from the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie Genève2019 (SIHH 2019 also known as the Geneva Fair 2019). Following the occurrences towards the tail end of 2018, we have yet to see how Baselworld 2019 will play out (you will have to wait till our next issue out in Summer 2019 to hear our thoughts), but for this issue, we want to focus on the latter and showcase all the fine and fantastic offerings announced during this major horological event.Of course the highlight of this issue is what many of us have been waiting for to present to you. It is our report of the Geneva Fair. Our team has worked hard on it and we are most anxious for you to read it.

2018 is off to a positive note and while it was noted in a previous issue about one brand beginning to accept cryptocurrencies, it looks like increasing revenues have ended such notions for many of the CEOs. That said, while markets are recovering, it looks like the US is still in the doldrums and we have reports which explain the nature and substance of the recovery and the state of the industry. In this issue, we also address how historical re-issues are a nice Cliff Notes summary for newcomers to heritage watchmaking and that while the last three decades have been mostly about ever increasing wizardry on the movements, we're finally seeing some innovation in cases, bracelets and even the faces of the watches.
