Transforming Africa

THIS issue goes Africa hopping, from the farms of South Africa to the tea plantations of Kenya and Rwanda. We also explore Tanzania’s development and its trade partnership with China.
Featured in sourcing guide, Tanzania has a fastgrowing economy and is clearly on the road to a better future if government will continue along its current direction. Whilst Tanzanians thirst for good brands, it is important to note that the majority can afford only lowcost products.
In Kenya and Rwanda, the tea fields have been blessed with early rain, helping to perk up output in the first quarter of this year. Not wanting to be left out, the Mozambique government has expressed its intent to revive hectares of tea plantations with the help of tea expert, India. See beverage for trends.
Meanwhile, the agricultural output of South Africa is generally doing well as reported in market snapshot. But every year its population is also growing at about 2%. The World Wildlife Fund estimates that the country has to double its output and imports to support local consumption.
Africa is facing a lot of changes, and is seeing much attention from all sides of the globe. The Africa Global Business Forum held in Dubai last month sets the tone for what rich countries like the UAE can do to transform Africa. Cooperation within the MENA region is something we look forward to with keen interest.
