Ensuring smooth and reliable supplies of energy is apprehended to be one of the major challenges of Bangladesh and the government in 2023. It is also being feared that it is going to be a big issue for the ruling party ahead of the next general election to be held in January 2024. However, the situation emerged in mid-2022 mainly due to the turbulence in the global fuel market created by the fallouts of the COVID pandemic and the war in Ukraine. The government then tried to overcome the crisis by a planned rationing of electricity supply. With the onset of winter, the demand for electricity declined and the pressure on primary energy mitigated to some extent, giving the authorities some sort of comfort. But in the summer of 2023, the demand for electricity and consequent primary energy will obviously increase substantially. The government has taken various initiatives to face the looming crisis, but energy sector experts are doubtful about the immediate outcome of the initiatives. They think that even if there is any development in this regard, it would not come before 2025.

Global energy politics may take another turn and twist even if the war comes to an end soon. Countries like Bangladesh must plan its energy and power sector policies and strategies extremely carefully considering all pros and cons.

Bangladesh is an energy deficit country like other countries in the region and most of the people do not have adequate access to the energy and power. The country is completely dependent on fossil energy source; at the same time, it is one of the most inefficient energy using countries in the world. 
It lacks efficiency in planning, management, generation, distribution, load management and even at the end user level consumption. 
In spite of the above drawbacks, issues relating to utilization of renewable energy, exploring alternative use of energy, planned use of environment friendly energy are significantly undermined in Bangladesh. 
The biggest challenge of Bangladesh is to find a path for balanced growth of its energy sector. Despite its resource constraints, EP dynamically strives to provide theenergy sector with a flow of information and create public awareness; so that policymakers get guidelines and platforms for its sustainable development.
