**Returning Home**
Growing up, a trip to my village was never considered a holiday. It happened once or twice a year, usually during school vacations or family occasions. As we got closer, the journey itself changed. Roads became narrower, shops fewer, electricity unreliable, and life moved at a slower pace than the cities we came from.
The village I visited was not unusual. It reflected a version of India many of us know well—where infrastructure was limited, services uneven, and daily life shaped more by availability than planning. I never thought of it as a travel destination. I went because I belonged there, not because I was travelling.
For a long time, villages existed outside the idea of tourism. Travel meant cities, hill stations, or beaches—places associated with leisure and convenience.
Over the past few years, however, I have seen that perception begin to change. Villages are becoming part of India’s travel conversation in meaningful ways. Roads are improving, homestays are emerging, and local communities are shaping travel experiences. In some places, this shift is supported by policy; in others, it is growing through local initiative.
What has changed most for me is how I view travelling to these places. The appeal is not novelty, but understanding life at a smaller and more grounded scale—how food is grown, how crafts are practised, and how communities function beyond the pace of urban life.
In this issue, I wanted to explore rural tourism in India as a growing system shaped by infrastructure, policy, and community participation. Villages are no longer simply places people come from; they are becoming places people travel to.
