An interview with Dr. Shantanu gives us an insight on careers in dentistry.

DID YOU PLAN TO ENTER DENTISTRY PRIOR TO MED SCHOOL?

Dentistry is something which has been opted for by choice and as a passion. It is a separate wing. Before medical school, I had an option to be able to choose between the fields of either medicine or dentistry. Getting into dentistry wasn’t by chance but a choice. Even though I could easily get into medical, I chose dentistry.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE THE MOST AND LEAST ABOUT YOUR SPECIALTY? WHAT SPECIALIZATIONS IN DENTISTRY SHOULD PEOPLE OPT FOR?

The best part about dentistry and most dental procedures is that you can actually transform the personality of a person. It is about creating and endowing beautiful smiles. While one can’t ignore the fact that going to the dentist is normally perceived by most people as undergoing pain. But it is important to understand that going to the dentist is more about ensuring a good dental hygiene as your mouth is a window to your overall health. The best part is when the dentist helps the individual to get relief from the pain and bequeaths the individual with a camera ready smile which for me is indeed rewarding.
