Worthing-based artist Lucy Marks is fast gaining recognition for her abstract landscapes but her success has not come overnight.
Worthing artist Lucy Marks aims to evoke the energy of the landscape with her abstract paintings of the Sussex countryside. It’s an approach that’s clearly gaining favour, as she’s about to embark on her first solo exhibition.
Her show Big Skies, Land and Sea at the Piers Feetham Gallery, Fulham, in April will showcase the landscapes of South Downs and Sussex coast. It marks a real turning point in Lucy’s career. At her home in Worthing, an expansive Victorian coach house that once housed a music studio and dance school, Lucy has displayed a selection of the paintings that will hang at the Piers Feetham Gallery. And it is clear that capturing both the differing landscapes and seasons is something that is very important to her.
“One of my favourite places to go is Bury Hill because you can go to the same spot every day of the week and it always looks different and I find that so exciting. My interpretation of the scene may not be everybody’s when they come to look at it, but what I do is try and capture the energy of the day and what it felt like to be painting there,” she says.
When I visit her trusty long haired Chihuahua keeps us company and usually accompanies Lucy on her walks across the Sussex countryside that inspire her paintings.
