The Forgotten Valley
Surrey Life|September 2017

The Italy is famous for its food and fast cars but the region that produces some of the country’s most celebrated exports is not on the typical tourist map. Tony Green explores Emilia Romagna

The Forgotten Valley

THERE is an ancient road that cuts across a swathe of northwest Italy from the River Po to the Adriatic coast. Built by the Romans more than 2,000 years ago the Via Emilia cuts through the heart of the region Emilia Romagna. Being relatively rich, Emilia Romagna is one of the less visited corners of the country. Tourists have not been needed to support the local economy. They’re too busy making some of the most exciting cars in the world, and the most incredible food.

The plain is frequently referred to as the food valley or the motor valley. There are 10 cities, the most famous being Parma, as well as the two ancient rivals of Bologna and Modena. Today they are united in a quest for excellence on a modest scale. This is where Ferraris come from. And Masteratis. And Lamborghinis. And Parma ham, Parmesan cheese, balsamic vinegar, tortellini and lasagna. It’s an ideal destination to savour some of the things that Italians are famous for the world over – their distinctive taste.
