Last year saw a preponderance of sun-tanned off-shoulder dresses, earthy colour palettes courtesy of Mr. West (Kanye West), black velvet chokers by the dozen and the eventual compliance to accept the term ‘athleisure’ as appropriate for active-wear worn out on the street. Fashion truly went digital, embracing the power of micro-publishing and creating a new wave of campaigns, stories and content made especially for social media. #ootd (Outfit of the day) solidified its presence by proving that it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, closely followed by the highly contoured selfie culture and anything to do with the Kardashian-Jenner clan. Although the prominence of popular Instagram hashtags as the defining authority on what is trending cannot be challenged, fashion — apart from dictating how ruffled thy ruffles may be and how high a hemline is high enough — has also been a canvas for intellectual discourse, political messaging and creating awareness. Therefore, a gander at this ubiquitous industry from the perspective of understanding its complexities brings about an unusual kind of trend report — one that may be markedly different from the often handed out dictates imbibing romanticism, embracing volume and welcoming sequins as appropriate daywear. But further exploration proves that everything in pop culture, socioeconomic conditions and the political scenario trickles down and has an effect on the likes and dislikes of the generation we live in.
