I Traveled 19 Hours to Chill Out

It’s 5:30 P.M., and I’m nodding off in the back of a van, only to be jolted awake every few minutes by a horn. Unlike the honking of angry New York City cab drivers, though, this is a friendly beep along the winding hills of Pune, India, to let other cars—or cattle—know you’re coming. It’s all incredibly foreign to me: the nine-and-a-half-hour time difference, the absurd humidity, and that I have no Wi-Fi.

Because I’m a digital editor, stepping away from technology isn’t just hard; with the relentless 24/7 news cycle, it can feel impossible. Which is why, whenever I’m in a cab, I’m usually cradling my laptop, trying to publish a story using my cell phone’s hotspot.
