I Feel My Best in This Dress

And Victoria Beckham’s new Target collaboration made it happen.

I Feel My Best in This Dress

I’m going to cut to the chase here: Victoria Beckham is launching a collection in collaboration with Target.

I know

It’s true that I’ve had lukewarm feelings about past collaborations between designers and fast-fashion brands. They never seem very fresh; I’m not one to wait in line for anything (except maybe fried chicken at Popeyes); and the pieces I want inevitably sell out in my size by the time I make it to the store. But Beckham is not someone I’ve ever had lukewarm feelings about.

I was 12 when the Spice Girls’ first hit, “Wannabe,” came out, which means Beckham has been a presence in my life for 20 years. Although back then I fancied myself an “alternative girl”—I was listening to No Doubt and Fiona Apple instead of Britney—I could not resist their siren song about friendships and their zig-azig-ahs. When I reminisce about their looks, Beckham (née Adams) stands out for being the classicist. Mel B. and Emma were always in platform sneakers, Mel C. in her sporty separates, and Victoria in ladylike shift dresses. I might not have shared her aesthetic then, but I remember respecting her for it.
