Fun fact: Sea turtles swim thousands of miles to return to the exact beach they were hatched in, when it is time to lay their own eggs. Scientists say they imprint on the unique magnetic eld of their natal beach, and use this info to return. What can you learn from this? Sharpen your senses. Get in touch with your inner self. And listen to the earth. Holidays are a good time to practise this. Balasundaram says, “When you detach from day-to-day chaos, your senses are more heightened.” Jhingon feels being tuned in to his senses helps him stay grounded. “It’s easy to get swayed by success, fame, money and even failure. But if you master the art of listening to your inner voice, you will not nd yourself susceptible to the changing phenomena around you.” Singh uses his shing trips to connect with nature. “Fishing is one of the most immersive experiences you can have with nature. You have to always be on your feet and essay the river; it’s almost therapeutic and meditative.” Even when he’s back in the city, the experience stays. “I grew up listening to the hush of the river. Even now if I close my eyes, I can hear it.” So when the stress gets to you, and you feel depleted, turn inwards—and nd your mojo.
Four years on, he decided to come back to his hometown, Mumbai. “It was tough; no one knew of my work in contrast to the little recognition I had achieved in certain circles in the UK.” Undeterred by the competition, he says, “It did not matter if there were 100 photographers in Mumbai or 1,000; I knew my work was unique.” Since, he’s worked with several brands and magazines, and shot celebrities like Dia Mirza, Aditi Rao Hydari, Radhika Apte, and Kalki Koechlin. His advice: “There will be days you will want to jump off a cliff, and that will be 99 out of 100. But if you do embark on a new path which is unknown and dark, do so knowing that the 100th day is all that matters. Do not break, do not look back, and do not doubt yourself.”
