Naoshima is one of 3,000 islands located in the Seto Inland Sea and is known for being a destination for art lovers. The island is also known as the main venue for the famous Setouchi Triennale – an art festival that takes place once every three years with the next one taking place this year in Spring, Summer and Autumn. From the Instagrammable installation art pieces dotting the beaches to the beautiful Benesse House, Lee Ufan and Chichu Art Museums, there are attractions galore for art aficionados. However, what’s hardly highlighted is that there is still plenty to do even if you don’t fancy a visit to the art gallery.
EXPLORE THE ISLAND ON A BICYCLE
The soft island breeze and hot sun beating down our backs made the day perfect for cycling around the scenic island. You’ll easily locate the bike rental shops as they’re right in front of the port. Bear in mind that the island roads can be hilly and winding, and biking uphill can be challenging if you’re not fit, so it’s best to rent a motorised bicycle instead of a manual one, or a motorcycle. As these are in high demand, try to arrive early to avoid disappointment.
