AIS KACANG BY DAPHNE LIM, 23

Featuring colours that resemble the famous Malaysian dessert, Daphne’s idea to come up with an Ais Kacang collection came about as she wanted to create awareness to the public that wearing colours can look as trendy as the minimalist trend. “I love how colourful this dessert is and the details of it. It makes people happy and that’s how I came up with the idea,” she explains.

To execute it, the Fashion Design graduate from SML Fashion Academy decided to opt for subtle shades of black, blue, green, red and yellow pieces of material that she put together to create this coat. She also decided to pair it with a sheer white dress on the runway to resemble the shaved ice. “To have some texture on the coat, I used thread to create the ribbon-like bow and glued them together. I understand that many people are not open to the idea of wearing colourful outfits, so to make this coat work, you can pair it with a white or nude-coloured mini-dress, or a simple T-shirt that’ll go well with culottes or paper bag trousers,” explains Daphne, who was the Grand Prize winner in this competition.
