The story unfolds one fateful night when seven strangers coincidently meet at the El Royale, a hotel at the border of California and Nevada. One of them is Dakota’s character Emily, a young woman on a mission. Set in the late ’60s with vibrant music that immerses the audience in the era, Bad Times at the El Royale is engrossing, moving and shocking with some dark humour thrown in. This is a thrilling cinematic experience from the inventive Drew Goddard (who directed The Cabin In The Woods and wrote The Martian), featuring a vacuum cleaner salesman (Jon Hamm), a priest (JeffBridges), a manipulative cult leader (Chris Hemsworth), a singer (Cynthia Erivo) and Emily Summerspring, a tough yet vulnerable young woman played by Dakota Johnson. While the film is gripping from the start, there are deeper themes concerning redemption in the rundown lobby of the Hotel El Royale. Just like everyone else we’ll encounter at the hotel, there is far more to Emily than meets the eye.
