The Crossover Between Fashion and Music Is One That Resonates With Amalina Anuar on a Personal Level. Here, She Talks to Two Dj Acts on Their Personal Style and the Beats They Spin.

Groove To The Beat

As a Fashion Writer and Stylist, you’d naturally assume that I live and breathe the latest clothes and trends. Sure, I do. But more than that, I live for music. It’s my first love and the genre that I first got hooked on (which was R&B) has even inspired my sense of style.

Growing up in the ’90s when MTV was all the rage, I used to watch a lot of music videos and was very much inspired by how the styling of the clothes connected to the songs. In fact, the first music video that kick-started my love for fashion was Missy Elliot’s Lose Control, when hip-hop culture was on the rise and athleisure style was super hot!

Fast forward to today, street style is slowly taking over the fashion world. The Creative Director of Off-White, Virgil Abloh is a prime example of that. He was the Creative Director of Yeezus, a fashion brand founded by Kanye West, and is now heading the men’s line at Louis Vuitton, bringing a youthful element to the brand and completely proving that streetwear and high-end can indeed work together.

The fashion and music connection runs way beyond the obvious. They inspire each other even in the smallest detail and you can see it from how different music eras are incorporated into modern fashion; there’s ’20s jazz, ’50s rock and roll, disco from the ’70s, and more. Today, fashion brands are reaching out to DJs to play on their runways and after-parties. How could you forget the eight-track mix of the iconic and futuristic French duo, Daft Punk at the Louis Vuitton SS’08 show, which perfectly matched the brand’s audacious collection? Social media influencers who dabble in the art of DJ-ing are also making it big in fashion, with the likes of Peggy Gou playing for Mulberry and Samantha Duenas aka @sosupersam at Adidas parties.
