AT MY SCHOOL, we practise a series of drills outside the realm of Chi Sau, Dan Chi Sau, Bong Lop and Paak drills to hone the action/reaction timing of the Wing Chun practitioner.

Counter Offensive Tactics - Breach And Devastate

The purpose is to breach and devastate any opening response or movement made by the assailant.

This training allows the Wing Chun practitioner to immediately and simultaneously attack, move, and take advantage of any gap in the assailant’s offence or defence. The strike is multifaceted and with proper timing, closes the distance.

Peek-a-Boo Defence Openings

The partner uses two focus mitts, or Boxing gloves, with their arms up, elbows tucked in a fully protective guard position, protecting their face using their forearms.

The drill initiates the moment, they open their defence for a brief second, and you immediately strike inside of the gap using a quick centreline punch. Close the distance, if needed, and use the outside Paak or reaping application to gain additional angles and openings of attack. Use this drill to train to immediately attack and counter especially when the assailant attempts any of the following: opens to throw a strike, opens briefly to slip or move, or get a better view of where you might be. This keeps the assailant on the defensive since each time they open for any reason they are immediately attacked.

Attacks with kicks to the stomach, groin, iliac furrow, top of the knee, and the inside thigh adductors are also effective. As the partner moves and creates an opening to one of these areas, you immediately attack using the appropriate counteroffensive.
