Mollywood, as the Malayalam Cinema industry is widely referred to as, has seen many great stars and technicians grace its galaxy, but none more so than the two big M’s - Mohanlal and Mammootty! here’s a look at who Mohanlal is and how he came to be one of the biggest stars ever...

The BEGINNING!

MOHANLAL VISWANATHAN NAIR, BORN IN 1960, IS THE LAST CHILD OF A GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEE AND HIS WIFE.

He followed up schooling with a degree in commerce. Mohanlal acted in his first film Thiranottam, in 1978. However, the movie took over twenty-five years to release and saw the light of day, only in 2005. When his friends sent his photo for a casting call, he was auditioned for the role but two of the four director judges were unimpressed with his performance. However, directors Fazil and Jijo Appachan were impressed by Mohanlal and he played the lead in Fazil’s maiden directorial Manjil Virinja Pookkal, which went on to become a blockbuster. After playing roles with negative shades in a couple of movies, Lalettan turned successful hero with the movie Ivide Thudangunnu. There has been no looking back, ever since.

The PRESENT!

AUGUST SAW THE RELEASE OF MOHANLAL’S LATEST RELEASE VISMAYAM, WHICH ALSO RELEASED IN TAMIL AND TELUGU AND THE MOVIE SAW HIS REUNITING ON SCREENS WITH ACTRESS GAUTAMI, AFTER A LONG GAP.

He also has three more films in hand, of which Oppam would be hitting screens soon. There are also reports that the city of Kozhikode would be holding a felicitation function for Lalettan, on August 15. The event is said to have a three-and-a-half hour show having films artists and most of the directors who played a major role in shaping Mohanlal’s career are expected to be a part of this
