Friends, life doesn’t always flow the way we want it to, because there is a Supreme power who has his own planning for our lives. However we continuously strive to do our best. All those who are in the shoes of, or have passed the stage of, wearing the 4-stripes and planning to shift to a shore job agree that shifting ashore is like starting the 2nd phase of cadetship. It is a similar job search and similar learning and settling experience.
Very few smart officers plan beyond the 4-stripes. You join the sea and your horizon is only up to the level of Master or Chief Engineer. Those who can look beyond lead a better life. There are many interesting stories, like, a 3rd Mate was impressed with the authority of a P&I Surveyor and headed for becoming one, and there was no looking back. A 3rd Engineer observed the vessel survey requirements in a dry dock and headed to become a Class Surveyor with Hull expertise. A 2nd Officer decided to go in for setting up a training institute and established one successfully. The list of such individuals is not too long but still quite a few.
