It is a matter of great pride for all Indians and the maritime fraternity, that he has now been elected as the Chairman of the ‘Sub-committee on Implementation of IMO Instruments’ (III) for 2017 and will chair the next plenary session of the III Sub-committee (III-4) at IMO in London, scheduled in July 2017.

I would first like to congratulate you for representing India at the IMO III Sub Committee and now being elected as the Chairman of one of the main sub-committees of IMO. Please tell us something about yourself and your position as Chairman of IMO III Sub Committee?

Thank you. I am a Naval Architect graduated from Cochin University of Science and Technology in 1988, and thereafter worked in shipyard for about 12 years, before joining the Govt of India as a Ship Surveyor. I have been working with the Indian maritime administration for past 16 years, now posted as Deputy Chief Surveyor at the DGS, Mumbai.

I did my Post Graduation in Maritime Administration from the World Maritime University at Malmo, Sweden, and have undergone various training programs during my tenure with DGS. I was also associated with IMO member State audits and verification of Goal-Based Standards (GBS) representing India. The government of India nominated me to attend various Sub-Committee meetings at IMO during the past 6 years, and then in 2015 my willingness was sought to become the chairman of the III sub-committee. The Ministry of Shipping and Govt of India supported the candidature and I on behalf of India was elected as Chairman for 2017.

Even with so many years of sailing experience, there are many seafarers who don’t have much knowledge about the setup and functioning of the IMO. Could you explain what is III Sub Committee?
