Estrogen Dominance - A Hidden Danger
A2 Aesthetic and Anti-Ageing Magazine|Autumn 2017 - Issue 21

Although estrogen is a hormone of youth and femininity, it becomes a cause for concern when unbalanced.

Dr Sly Nedic
Estrogen Dominance - A Hidden Danger

Estrogen dominance is an important cause of many bothersome and dangerous conditions confronting modern women, but is often not acknowledged by conventional medicine.

Estrogen dominance means that the estrogen hormone is higher in relation to other reproductive hormones. An inability to lose weight (especially below the waistline), hormone-sensitive cancers such as breast cancer, premature ovarian failure (infertility reaching epidemic proportions), fibroids, and PMS are just a few of the conditions typical in estrogen dominance.

From an integrative medicine point of view, we always identify the cause of a disease, and then start with addressing that rather than the consequence.

The causal complexity of estrogen dominance

CHRONIC STRESS

During periods of continuous stress, cortisol production becomes a priority for survival. Through this process, the body sacrifices the production of other hormones, mainly progesterone, which leads to higher levels of unopposed estrogen.

Women usually have prolonged and heavier menstrual bleeding and shorter cycles. If this continues, it increases the risk of hormone-sensitive cancers. Adding bio-identical progesterone in this situation can improve the ratio between estrogen and progesterone, and regulate the cycle. The real cure, however, would be intervening in the causes of chronic stress.
