From the tranquility of Hoi An to the vibrant energy of Ho Chi Minh City, the different sides of Vietnam are discovered through its historical landmarks, unique delicacies and charming residents
It’s all in the details. Upon arriving in Vietnam, you’ll first be greeted by its humid atmosphere, sweetened by the typical aromas of Asia. The effect is soothing, and even more so as you make your way to the quiet town of Hoi An.
A former trading port of the historic Silk Road, Hoi An once served as a bustling hub between the 15th and 19th centuries. There, you’ll find wooden houses built at the edge of the Thu Bon River that combine a myriad of foreign influences such as French, Japanese and Chinese — proof of its vibrant past. In more recent times, though, the energy of the town seemed to slowly dissipate.
That is, until it was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hoi An is now alive again, with tourists seeking to discover the town’s mix of exotic influences on its streets. Local craftsmen are another a huge draw, showcasing unique skills such as palm-weaving, crafting fabric lanterns and ceramic art.
A walk into the the heart of the city where the central market is located promises a feast for the senses. There, women in traditional hats unpack fish freshly caught in the morning amongst wicker baskets of fruits, vegetables, flowers, fresh eggs and fragrant spices. For the hungry, the market offers local street food delicacies: grilled skewers, banh mi, banana cakes and soups of lotus seeds.
