The first time I saw&nbsp;Vempati&nbsp;Ravi Shankar dance was in&nbsp;1992 when he was&nbsp;practising&nbsp;a simple&nbsp;jati, yet I was spellbound. That was my first day at the&nbsp;Kuchipudi&nbsp;Art Academy and I wished to dance like Ravi. When he taught he transferred that energy, grace, and fluidity. A selfless teacher,&nbsp;Vempati&nbsp;Ravi Shankar, gave his all to his students, but he was very demanding. He expected total dedication to the art. For him&nbsp;Kuchipudi&nbsp;was the way of life.Ravi was the youngest (and only dancing) son of celebrity&nbsp;Kuchipudi&nbsp;guru&nbsp;Vempati&nbsp;Chinna&nbsp;Satyam. He was born on 11 October 1969. In Ravi&rsquo;s own words, &ldquo;Initially I was not encouraged to dance. Every morning&nbsp;Mastergaru&nbsp;(that is how he used to call his father) would teach&nbsp;Kuchipudi&nbsp;to his star students like&nbsp;Sobha&nbsp;Naidu&nbsp;and&nbsp;Manju&nbsp;Bhargavi&nbsp;in a thatched hut. I used to peep into the class from a hole in the thatched wall. One day I was imitating their movements when&nbsp;Balakka&nbsp;(A.B. Bala&nbsp;Kondala&nbsp;Rao, one of&nbsp;Mastergaru&rsquo;s senior disciples) saw me, and unknown to him, she started teaching me dance. After some years, on&nbsp;Vijayadasami&nbsp;day, she presented me before&nbsp;Mastergaru. After watching me he said, &ldquo;Practise&nbsp;well. Come to the class from tomorrow.&rdquo; After that I started dancing in all his dance&shy;dramas. Initially I did small roles and slowly grew into main roles.&rdquo; Ravi&rsquo;s most memorable role was that of&nbsp;Ardhanareeswara&mdash; he danced as Siva and&nbsp;Sakti&mdash;but my personal&nbsp;favourite&nbsp;was&nbsp;Ananda&nbsp;Tandava. His&nbsp;akasa&nbsp;charis&nbsp;in it were fascinating, a sheer delight to watch.Ravi grew in proficiency as a&nbsp;Kuchipudi&nbsp;dancer, but soon fate dealt a cruel blow. He suffered from kidney failure and had to undergo dialysis till he found a kidney donor in 2003. Undeterred, he continued to dance. In 2009 his kidney failed once again and dialysis became a regular feature. Though he became physically weak, the spirit of the dancer remained intact. He danced for the last time on stage in 2012 at the Temple of Fine Arts in Malaysia. He found joy in teaching, composing lyrics and choreography. He composed and choreographed both traditional and contemporary themes in&nbsp;Kuchipudi&nbsp;which have received&nbsp;acclaim like&nbsp;Sree&nbsp;Nava Durga,&nbsp;Leela&nbsp;Ganapati,&nbsp;Vande&nbsp;Umasutam,&nbsp;Sree&nbsp;Bhuvaneswari&nbsp;and&nbsp;Sivashtapadi,&nbsp;Kalamlo&nbsp;Kalateetudu&nbsp;(the life history of&nbsp;Ramana&nbsp;Maharshi),&nbsp;Visveswara&nbsp;Vitayam( the life history of the famous civil engineer) and&nbsp;Andhra&nbsp;Kala&nbsp;Vijayam&nbsp;(the glory of&nbsp;Andhra&nbsp;Pradesh). Like his father, Ravi also remained faithful to the traditional art of&nbsp;Kuchipudi&nbsp;and all his choreographed dance&shy;dramas have the&nbsp;flavour&nbsp;of traditional&nbsp;Kuchipudi.Ravi Shankar&rsquo;s life was full of emotional and physical troubles. With the passing away of his father&shy;guru&nbsp;Vempati&nbsp;Chinna&nbsp;Satyam, he faced several emotional upheavals, yet he kept the dance alive in him. His constant worry was about the status of the art of&nbsp;Kuchipudi. Till his last breath&nbsp;Vempati&nbsp;Ravi Shankar lived&nbsp;Kuchipudi. Even a fracture resulting from a fall, which confined him to a wheel-chair for sometime, did not deter him from taking classes, nor did his dialysis routine. Till the end he continued to teach&nbsp;Kuchipudi&mdash;the art form he loved. His dance will now continue in the dance of his numerous students.
