Quite A Few Bright Spots

This season has thrown many new names judging from the schedules of various sabhas. How many of them will stand the test of time is to be seen. Some young musicians who entered the field not long ago, such as flautist J.A. Jayanth, Brinda Manickavasagam, Aishwarya Sankar, Vignesh Iswar, Ashwath Narayanan, and Venkat Nagarajan have managed to impress both rasikas and organisers and are on the way to consolidating their position.

Brinda Manickavasagam’s kutcheri for Nada Inbam was well balanced— not just her voice which has matured but her presentation of the concert too. Not many bother to sing alapana for Athana and her effort was quite good, followed by Sreekumara nagaralaye with swaras for pallavi. Her elaboration of Kalyani had some attractive phrases; for Sandehamu yalara she took up niraval and swaras at Vande gunaseela; though the niraval by violinist Melakaveri Thyagarajan was more interesting. Karunapayonidhe in Surati was the main item. Her alapana was commendable except for a few repetitive prayogas.
