Trained in Bharatanatyam by the late Guru K.J. Sarasa, Srekala Bharath&rsquo;s personality and dance reflect the vibrancy of the Vazhuvoor bani. She is an ebullient dancer, good choreographer and an inspirational teacher. Srekala will receive the Acharya Choodamani award from Sri Krishna Gana Sabha on the inaugural evening of the music and dance festival in December.Born on 4 July 1961, she started learning at the age of seven and had her arangetram on 22 May 1972. Her performance career took off when she was in school and continued during her college days. After securing a degree in economics and a diploma in travel and tourism, followed by her marriage to Bharath, there was a short break for childbirth. She was back on stage but faced a setback when diagnosed with brain tumour. This caused a second break but Srekala soon bounced back as is her wont. In 1990, she was struck down with a serious ailment which forced her to be away from dance for two years. This did not deter her; she worked hard and her zeal and persistence paid dividends as dance took centrestage once again. Her passion for the art gave her the strength to fight several odds and pursue Bharatanatyam. Srekala soon became a busy performer dancing at every major venue in Chennai, in temple festivals in the south, and festivals abroad. Her journey as a Bharatanatyam dancer and teacher has taken her through 30 countries in five continents (ICCR selected her to tour 11 countries). Srekala is an A Grade artist of Doordarshan. A vivacious stage presence, firm footwork, easily comprehensible abhinaya and adherence to tradition are characteristic features of her dance.Srekala&rsquo;s quest for perfection and a &lsquo;no-error&rsquo; finish in dance is evident in her teaching style. Though a strict disciplinarian, she is an affectionate teacher. She established the Thejas School of Performing Arts (TSPA) in 1999 in Chennai with four students; the number has now grown manifold. Many bright young dancers have emerged from her stable. She personally supervises sessions and imparts skills at the beginner and the advanced levels. Srekala is in step with the times and also conducts dance classes via Skype for students in international locations. In her bid to encourage young talent, She has been conducting Thejas Bala Natyotsav, for the last eight years, to provide performance opportunities to talented dancers in the age group of 8 to12. She presented her troupe of 30 students at the silver jubilee celebrations of Art of Living. Some of her little students presented the well-known story The Lion and the Mouse, under the aegis of Scholastic India&rsquo;s project Reading through Dance, at IIT-Madras. Srekala has presented papers on dance and conducted lecture demonstrations. She has brought out two DVDs titled Learn Bharatanatyam as part of the Natya Vardhini series produced by Geethanjali.Srekala has choreographed thematic presentations in Bharatanatyam ranging from the traditional to social issues, both in solo and group formats, which have received critical acclaim. Some of her noteworthy presentations are Bhakta Meera, Mahila Mahima, Amrapali, Jai Santoshi Maa, Annamayya Bhakti Manjari (on navavidha bhakti), Sri Tyagaraja Vaibhavam, Chakravarti Tirumagan, Dasavataram and Arupadai Veedu.She has received several awards including the Kalaimamani from the Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Manram, Nadanamamani from Kartik Fine Arts, Yuva Kala Bharati from Bharat Kalachar, Vani Kala Sudhakara from Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha, Natya Kala Sikhamani from Indian Fine Arts Society, Natya Ilavarasi from Shanmukhananda Sabha, New Delhi, Senior Fellowship from the Government of India, and Bharata Rathnam from the Sri Lankan Government.Srekala derives great joy from Bharatanatyam and wishes to share it with her students and rasikas. In one of her interviews Srekala has said, &ldquo;I am deeply committed to this divine dance form and I want to impart this knowledge to as many learners as possible.
